From the Stone Age through the Bronze Age and the Iron Age to the Modern Age, new classes of materials with superior properties have defined entire eras of human development. This progress has not only driven technological advancement but has also directly shaped the economic, ecological, and social development of humankind.
Current technological challenges of high relevance include power generation from renewable sources, e-mobility, and CO₂ reduction, to name a few. Yet the major barrier to technological breakthroughs in these fields remains the lack of suitable materials that meet the required property profiles. For example:

Large-scale power generation: a lack of suitable materials able to withstand high operating temperatures and corrosive environments

Electric mobility: a lack of battery materials offering high electric capacity with a small ecological footprint

Hydrogen-powered heavy industries: a lack of suitable H₂ capture and storage solutions, due to hydrogen’s high mobility

Direct CO₂ capture and conversion: a lack of suitable catalytic materials

The international Master’s course in Materials Engineering at RWTH Aachen University aims to address these challenges by offering a broad study program in materials science and engineering. The program covers the entire materials development process, from materials design at the atomic scale to the construction of bulk components with high structural integrity and complex property profiles, naturally including the underlying production and manufacturing processes involved. Particular emphasis is placed on the correlation between materials‘ composition and structure, on one hand, and production and manufacturing processes, on the other, in shaping the properties that ultimately emerge.

Knowledge and understanding of these correlations enable graduates of this study program to address scientific and engineering problems both theoretically and experimentally, in fundamental research as well as in application-oriented industrial development. Graduates are able to manage projects and work in interdisciplinary teams, using state-of-the-art materials simulation and analysis techniques to develop novel materials solutions for innovative engineering applications and production processes.

Additional Information

You can find more information about the master’s program on the RWTH Aachen University website.
Naturally, you can also find more information on the Materials Engineering AG website.

Examination Regulations

You can find the current examination regulations here in the Official Announcements of RWTH Aachen University.
